Entered Board's service on 6.10.1930 as weir keeper.  In 1941 he was called out at night by the police to attend the weir.  As there was danger of considerable flooding in the Lee Bridge and West Ham area, he at once turned out in his nightclothes and attended to his weir.  Immediately after this he was sick with pneumonia for some two months.  In March 1942, it was found that he was unfit for further duty as a weir keeper, and it was decided to transfer him to the police force, where he was given light duties.....He last went on duty on 20th January 1944....  Decided that he should be retired from the Board's service on 6.6.1944.  He was granted, in addition to his pension an ex gratia allowance of 10/- per week.
